The year is still relatively new, and that means it is as good a time as any to take a look at the best antivirus solutions for 2016, and how they stack up against one another.
Once again, AV-Comparatives, the Austrian security firm, is the one doing the listing.
These are, of course, the ones that figured Windows Defender was okay at providing operating system security at best, even though Microsoft has improved the program a few notches recently with regular updates and virus definitions.
In any case, this is a bit of a summary of last year, and lists the best security products the firm tested in 2016, and how they have performed during that time span.
Not many surprises here, as Avira was chosen as the top product for 2016 — it offered maximum protection in all tests through last year, delivering flawless results in tests for file detection, performance, real-world protection and malware removal.
Usually considered the top two antivirus programs respectively, both Bitdefender and Kaspersky Lab were found to be outstanding providers of security products.
Their performance was impressive during 2016 too, the organization says, and both scored maximum points in all tests.
Other top rated products for the year that just went by include solutions from Emsisoft, ESET, Tencent, ThreatTrack VIPRE, all of which were very close to delivering perfect protection, but failed to get maximum points in some cases.
And when it comes to file detection, it is hard to beat the two clear leaders, Avira and Kaspersky Labs, scoring over 99.9% during the tests.
